 Show Date: 11/8/2005
Segment 1 – You got the Griff and What’s Hot on eBay

Lee: A football franchise, top 10 holiday toys, and vanilla Coke all feature in today’s eBay Radio news. I’m Lee Mirabal. It’s not even in stores, but the new Xbox 360 is already sold out. You can still buy the $299 device on eBay, but it will cost you somewhere in the vicinity of $1,700.

Reviews and Guides is a new site on eBay. It allows users to read and write product reviews and topical guides. In fact, eBay already has thousands of reviews and guides live on the site. EBay is inviting you to learn more about products before making your purchases and learn how you can use Reviews and Guides to drive more traffic to your listings.

The top 10 hottest holiday toy list is out. EBay research shows that this year’s most popular toys are the Roborapter, the Holiday Barbie, and the Fly Computer Pen, among others.

EBay may be the only place you’ll be able to find Vanilla Coke. Coca-Cola says it’s phasing out Vanilla Coke and Vanilla Diet Coke in the United States by the end of the year. It will also quit making Diet Coke with lemon.

The top of Fortune Magazine’s new list of the 50 most powerful women in business is Meg Whitman, head of eBay. Congratulations Meg.

Want to own a football team? One of America’s most successful minor league professional sports franchises is listed on eBay. They are the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, 2-time national indoor football champions. The franchise is based in Wheeling, West Virginia, just one hour from the football rabid Pittsburgh area and less than two hours from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. The sellers are looking for an enthusiastic, aspiring new owner who will steward the Greyhounds in the United Indoor Football Association. Bidding last I looked was up to $100,544.44. That’s eBay Radio news. Now back to eBay Radio where you got the Griff.

Griff: Good to have you with us. This segment of eBay Radio is brought to you by Auctiva.com, a simple and free selling solution for eBay sellers. And what a week it’s been. It just gets better and better. Let’s see, what was in the news that struck me this week? $1,700 for an Xbox 360.

Lee: Well that was my calculation. I went on and kind of looked at some of them that had sold and that was sort of my calculation, but the new story I read in a newspaper said $4,000, but I couldn’t find one for that. Maybe I just didn’t look well.

Griff: Hmm, let me get my checkbook out, I can’t wait to buy one.

Lee: Yeah, mm-Hm.

Griff: Well, you know, kudos to all those savvy, smart eBay sellers who bought them up.

Lee: Oh yeah.

Griff: You know, as a buyer I’ve actually taken part in that in the past with the latest cell phone recently from my service provider. I just had to have it and when I tried to get it from my service provider they were sold out. What they did was when they released it, eBay sellers bought them up.

Lee: Is that what happened?

Griff: Yeah.

Lee: Wow.

Griff: You know, I didn’t mind. I don’t care.

Lee: Well what’s good about the phone. Tell me about the phone because I’m looking for a new one. I think I’m getting like one of those Blackberry things.

Griff: That’s what it is.

Lee: (Laughter).

Griff: If you ever stop by a corporation, for example eBay, you’ll see all the workers going from one building to the other, their thumbs furiously pumping their little device, getting hit by cars as they cross the street not looking.

Lee: Well I need it because I’m just tired of having all my information in another thing and then having that and, you know.

Griff: Well why don’t you buy it for yourself.

Lee: I think I’m going to.

Griff: Yeah, it’s the crazy time of year right now on eBay with all the buying and selling that’s starting right now. It started with Halloween and the frenzy just picks up.

Lee: Yeah. And I believe in buying one’s self a gift.

Griff: You do?

Lee: Yeah. I think we should buy ourselves a gift every holiday.

Griff: Every day.

Lee: Yeah.

Griff: I buy myself something every day. See, I figure you have to like yourself and you have to treat yourself really well.

Lee: Sure.

Griff: So every day I buy something on eBay and a couple days later it shows up and it’s a present. And I look at myself in the mirror and I say, oh, you shouldn’t have.

Lee: You know, no matter what I buy online I just love to get that package from that eBay seller. I’m with you too.

Griff: Yes.

Lee: You know, and I open the package at home, and it’s exciting.

Griff: It’s addictive.

Lee: I like it.

Griff: I’m not supposed to say that, but it is.

Lee: I just bought a brazier.

Griff: Me too.

Lee: (Laughter).

Griff: (Laughter) Were you outbidding me on mine?

Lee: It was pink.

Griff: Yep, same one.

Lee: (Laughter) No, there’s a company that makes them that you can hardly find them in like regular stores, but I found them on eBay, so.

Griff: What’s unique about this one?

Lee: Well, the company is Valmont and they’re just unique. They have nice lace and I just like the way they fit, you know, that kind of deal.

Griff: Yeah, I’m with you on that one, I love the way they fit.

Lee: (Laughter).

Griff: It makes me feel so snug and tight. Hey, speaking of snug and tight, Lee, what’s hot on eBay this week?

Announcer: It’s time for What’s Hot Now on eBay brought to you by HammerTapNow.com.

Jen: Hello eBay sellers. This is HammerTap’s Jen Cano with the What’s Hot on eBay newsflash. EBay has given fishing footwear in sporting goods a super-hot rating, but not all fishing footwear is equal, at least not on eBay. I put our auction research software, DeepAnalysis, to work to find out just which brand is best. Cabela’s waders are the clear winner selling 90% of the time on average. But we can do even better than that. The sales rate goes through the roof for auctions ending on a Friday. Friday also happens to be the best ending day for profits for this product. On average that day came out $20 ahead of the other days. If you’re interested in more information about the best closing day for your product, visit HammerTapNow.com and click on the Myth Busters Report icon, plus get 50% off your first month’s subscription at HammerTapNow.com.

Lee: There you go.

Griff: There it is. And I have to thank you guys back at wsRadio. You know what came in the mail for me…

Lee: What?

Griff: …my mute button.

Lee: Oh good.

Griff: So now if I suddenly feel a sneeze or a cough coming on…

Lee: Go ahead, do it, let’s hear how it sounds.

Griff: …and I just push…this…and…go…off…

Lee: Oh gosh.

Griff: There you go.

Lee: We gave him a new toy.

Griff: Yeah and I can’t stop playing with it.

Lee: It’s called a cough drop I think.

Griff: Is that what they call it?

Lee: I think so, yeah.

Griff: I better not try to swallow it, it’s huge.

Lee: Mm-Hm.

Griff: Ask Griff on Sunday was a big hit.

Lee: Oh yes, phones rang off the hook. And you know, the reason that we decided to start the new show on Sunday is because people have been telling us sometimes they can’t get in to ask a question because they’re working or whatever on Tuesdays. And people actually called in and said that to us.

Griff: Yeah, the phone lines were backed up. It looked like a Bay area freeway. And we got to most of the calls. Just so you’ll know we’re tweaking the idea of making this show two hours too, I think.

Lee: Right, the one on Sunday.

Griff: I think it should be. I have nothing else to do on Sunday.

Lee: What does that say about us, that we both said, oh yeah, we’ll do it.

Griff: That we don’t have a life.

Lee: Yeah, I guess.

Griff: I don’t, I’m the first to admit it. But we have a huge radio show coming up with lots of cool guests. We have Chris Malta coming up right after the break.

Lee: Oh, you know who’s going to fill in for Chris is his co-host, Rob Cowie.

Griff: Oh, I just checked the message board, there it is.

Lee: Yeah.

Griff: So Rob Cowie will be on. He’s also partner in the business, Worldwide Brands.

Lee: Right.

Griff: And they’re bringing on a guest, Rob’s bringing a guest, somebody who knows how to buy and sell antiques on eBay.

Lee: Rob Cowie was the producer of The Blair Witch Project movie.

Griff: And he was the producer…

Lee: He’s a Hollywood producer.

Griff: Hey, you know, everyone’s getting into that game. I went to see a great movie called “Goodnight and Good Luck”…

Lee: Mm-Hm.

Griff: …Jeff Skoll is the producer.

Lee: This segment of eBay Radio is brought to you by Auctiva.com, a simple and free selling solution for eBay sellers.

Griff: Coming up, our friend Rob Cowie with the product sourcing segment and a special guest who offers something you need to know about buying and selling antiques and collectibles when we return right here with more of eBay Radio.
