If you want to sell online, it’s important to understand online shoppers needs and habits. Because then it’s easier to give what online customers want.
What do you have?
The customer came to your site to shop. Show them what you have and do it quickly before they lose interest. Your customer should be able to get an overview of what it is that your site offers within the first few seconds of being on your site.
Secondly, make your prices shown right next to the picture of the item you are offering. Don’t make your customers search for the price, or have to click several times or add to cart to find it. Make it plain and clear and immediate. Checking out your products, is definitely what online customers want!
Can I Trust You?
Business is based on trust. ALL business is. For an online business, it’s even more important because your customer can’t take the product home right away.
Make your policies clear and show them often. Tell your customers that they mean the world to you and you want to protect their information. Promise that you won’t give away any of their data. Make sure to show that your site is safe and their credit card information is secure with badges and seals.
Give Me All the Information
Remember, that one of the biggest advantages of selling online is space. You have plenty of room to provide full descriptions of the products. There is also no reason to skimp on other details about your business or products.
Sell clothing? Provide size and measurement charts. Sell food? Provide weights, ingredients and nutritional information.
Never be reluctant about telling your customers all the ways that your products are better than others.
This is just a quick note to let you know what products the new Wholesalers and Dropshippers have, that we added the Worldwide Brands Directory of Certified Wholesalers in February 2021.
Finding new wholesale suppliers for our members is WHAT WE DO! And we love what we do! Every business day, we are contacting hundreds of suppliers looking for the best wholesalers to certify and add to the Wholesalers and Dropshippers Directory. We announce new products added on our social streams, but you can always get this monthly update on our blog or newsletter.
For February we added suppliers, that together, offer a total SKU count of over 50,000 products!! Best of all these suppliers are ready to work with our online retailer members and most were added as a result of a member product request.
One of the major battles of putting together a website is knowing what shoppers want and providing information to them in a way that they can easily absorb it. The Shoppers Mindset is what we are going to call it.
“Give the lady what she wants.” Famous words spoken by Marshall Field, entrepreneur and department store founder. Even though that was from the 1800’s, it still holds true today. Give the online shoppers what they want.
How Customers Browse
Let’s start with how the shopper is most likely browsing online. Most people are in a state of hurried distraction. ALL….THE….TIME. They are quickly browsing on their phone will riding the subway. Or they are checking a few things out during a TV commercial. Perhaps they are sitting at the office at 4pm on a Friday just waiting for the weekend to start.
With so much distraction, you have to get the information to them in a way they can comprehend and absorb it quickly. Studies have shown that shoppers aren’t reading top to bottom or from left to right. Actually, they aren’t really reading at all. At least not at first. They are just flipping to the next page.. click .. click… click. Until something gets their attention.
Now, I’m not saying that you should remove your text copy and just throw up images and headlines on your site. You NEED that wonderful content you wrote about you. your business and about your products. That is ESSENTIAL to search engines to get traffic! We are talking about how the Shopper typically browses online.
So keep all that, but KEEP IT SIMPLE at the same time.
Get to the point and get it all out in the open. Who are you? What is your mission? What do you have for me? Why should I shop here?
Keep those questions in mind when building the copy for your home page. You’ve got about 30 seconds to a minute to get their attention.
Your home page is your welcome mat, your store front, your greeter at the door. There are things that are extremely important to include on your home page.
You need to make a good first impression here. It is critical because shoppers move from site to site with just a click or a tap. Just a few extra seconds of load time waiting for complex images to load can make the difference between a sale or not.
So how do you design a winning home page?
1. Keep It Simple! Don’t overload your page with more than 3 or 4 images and don’t keep your images oversized.
2. Find a Fast Hosting Company Not all servers are created equal. Some are super fast and others are slower. You need to test your site and if your pages take 10 or 20 seconds to load, talk to your hosting company for suggestions and see if they have a faster machine to move you to.
3. Sales, Sales, Sales! The whole point of your site is to make sales. So don’t forget to include sales hooks and promotions like a contest, giveaway or coupon on your home page. You need to hook your readers into learning more, and sale hooks do just that.
4. Keep it Short You want to put your most important information at the top or near the top. Readers don’t want to scroll through an endless amount of information to get to where they want.
Your home page is your welcome mat. Think about what is on the front of a physical store. Don’t forget to include your store name, business name and logo, links to the main areas of your site and some quick contact options for your customers. Need some ideas? Take a look at some of your favorite stores online for inspiration!
For the online world, they say that content is King, and that’s not wrong! But if content is the King, then carefully crafted content is the Emperor.
Not just any content will make your online business rule, you need the right content to make customers want to explore your site and buy.
So what is that right content? The content that you put on your site should…
1. Consider how people absorb information. Fast. People want information fast. If it takes too long to get to the point, they will leave.
2. Make it easy for customers to know you and see what you have to offer. Be personal on your about us page and make sure that your products are super easy to locate with buttons in several locations as well as images.
3. Be friendly, concise and clear. Don’t get too formal in your tone. Use easy to read and understand words. Be concise in what you say so you aren’t rambling and clearly organize your content so it makes sense.
4. Develop a one on one relationship by inviting interaction. Make sure that you have your social icons clearly visible for your customers so they can like and follow you. Invite them to comment on your posts or use social media as a form of customer support.
Always be straightforward about who you are and where you’re coming from on your site. Only include content that is useful, exciting, organized and easy to read.
This is just a quick note to let you know what products the new Wholesalers and Dropshippers have, that we added the Worldwide Brands Directory of Certified Wholesalers in January 2021!
Finding new wholesale suppliers for our members is WHAT WE DO! And we love what we do! Every business day, we are contacting hundreds of suppliers looking for the best wholesalers to certify and add to the Wholesaler & Dropshipper Directory.

As tempting as it may be to just dive in and get started, you should really take a moment to plan. Whether you are going to sell children’s toys or athletic socks, things will go so much more smoothly if you take the time for mapping out your online store.
Home is the starting point of any website. It is your welcome page, your store front, the place where you convey your brand the most. Everything branches off the home page – so start by creating a list of the pages you want to include and break them into categories.
For example: Mapping Out Your Online Store Simply
This would be a simple site of course, but you don’t need to complicate things! So we have the home page, and from there we will branch off into our business information and products for sale and then the sub-pages from there.
You can easily make bullet points for what you want to include on these pages so you can see if you maybe you need to create more pages for other important information.
Page Examples
An example of that would be the Order Info page. Let’s say you talk about how to order from you, the method of payments you accept as well as shipping information on this page. But then you want to also talk about returns/exchanges and your official terms & conditions and your privacy policy. That page will start to get super long! So if you find that you are going to stack too may topics on one page, consider making other pages to address those other topics.
Then you would add on to the Order Info and have sub-pages under that for Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, Returns/Exchanges to create 3 other pages.
For Contact Us, maybe you want to include sub-pages for your social media feeds or maybe you want to create a sub-page with FAQ’s?
Choices and options for what you decide to include on your site are endless. Use this simple mapping chart to help you organize your thoughts and to make sure that you will be including everything that you need to on your site. Use it as your starting point roadmap that will guide you to a fully finished website!
And don’t forget… if you need to find wholesale products to buy from real wholesale suppliers, look no further than our Directory!
You may be wondering what type of equipment you will need to start an online business. One of the best things about online business is the low overhead. (overhead means operating expenses). You don’t have to take out loans, pay rent, remodel your storefront, pay license fees, pay employees and etc.
A lot of these traditional retail tasks are eliminated with an online business. But there are things like instead of painting the walls of your store, you pick colors and graphics for your online store. Other than paying your landlord a rent check, you are paying for hosting instead.
The main expenses for your online business are computer related; software and hardware. Internet, email, networking, programs & applications that you will need to run smoothly and efficiently. You obviously don’t need the best of the best here. You will find things that can fit any budget.
Great news! If you already have a computer and an internet connection, you are already mainly there and so upgrading your equipment may be unnecessary. But also keep in mind that older devices and programs are lacking in new features and connectivity for technical aspects of your business. So if your computer is frustrating you due to slow speeds, then you should research to upgrade your machine or get a new one.
Your computer is your main device for work, and so eliminating as much frustration and stress just by buying a new device will save you so much headache in the long run and will allow you to enjoy what you are doing so much more!
Computer software can add up!
Software is a biggie here. Software can be extremely expensive and the different kinds of things you need can quickly add up. Keep on reading and find here more details on using business software.
Office programs like Excel are a must have. With Microsoft 365 for Business you can pay monthly and have access to cloud storage, email and office applications across all your devices. Having this flexibility is super important. If your computer crashes, you will have all your saved things on the cloud to access from another computer quickly. I know that cloud saving with apps like Dropbox have been extremely important for us!
Don’t forget security! You will have access to customers private information. It is your duty to ensure that information is protected as much as possible with anti-virus and internet safety programs. Secondly, viruses are always popping up online and sometimes in surprising places. So just do the right thing and protect yourself and your customers. Norton360 is an excellent program for this!
Storefront Software – thankfully with most store hosting companies these days, they put a nice administration area together for you to use for your online store. So buying other site building, shopping cart type software is eliminated with getting the one service. Bundling as much together as possible is definitely the way to go when you are just getting started. If you can pay just a handful of companies for their services or programs, it will be easier to manage. As you get comfortable and familiar with how things work, then you can start looking into cutting more costs.
You need accounting!
The last thing we will talk about here is accounting software. You can hire an accountant to handle everything for you, or you can do it yourself by using awesome programs like Quickbooks. Quickbooks will integrate to allow you to automatically pull your transactions in to the system for easier tracking and reporting.
You will need other things down the road, like promotion applications and services for marketing and perhaps graphic creation software to edit and create images. But what we have above are great resources for you to start an online business.
