This Week's Insider Tip
What to ask Wholesale Suppliers
By Tisha Hedges, Director of Operations of Worldwide Brands

Here at WorldwideBrands.com, we already do the legwork for you in finding legitimate wholesale suppliers that work with online retailers. We also provide the answers to many of the questions that you would normally ask the supplier yourself. But if you want to find suppliers on your own, this article will give you some advice on things you shouldn't forget to ask them.

Before you contact or submit any kind of information to the "supplier", you need to determine if they are real wholesale suppliers. You can find things to watch out for on our Scam Watch Page.  We have our own proprietary methods of certifying wholesale suppliers for legitimacy before we add them to our Directory. So we won't share all of our secrets, but the Scam Watch page will get you started.

After you determine if the company is legitimate, then you can reach out to them with questions. Here are the top 5 that we ask and why...

1. Do you work with retailers that only sell products online?
There are still a lot of manufacturers and wholesale suppliers that don't work with online only retailers. They still continue to only work with brick and mortar stores. If those stores also sell online, OK, but they must have a physical store front. Since our wholesaler Directory is for online only retailers, this is a very important question to ask! So if the answer is No, you know you can move on.\

2. Do you drop ship? If no, what is your minimum order?
If you don't want to hold inventory, and you need your wholesale supplier to also be your fulfillment center, then you of course need to ask this question. If they have a minimum order requirement, then that means you need to stock and ship those products yourself, or have those products sent to another fulfillment center. There are a lot of products that typically are only sold with minimum orders. Clothing and shoes is usually only sold with minimum order requirements and that's because clothing and shoes are the highest returned products. It doesn't fit, it was the wrong color, it has damage... Since these products are returned and exchanged more often than anything else, suppliers require their retailers to stock multiples of the products to handle their own returns.

3. What are the wholesale prices?
Many times, wholesale suppliers will not give you this information until you setup with them and provide your business information. So one thing you can do, is in order to get an understanding of the wholesale prices, choose a few of their products and ask what the price per unit is of product X and product Y.

4. What is your average shipping time?
This will vary if you are buying for drop shipping or buying bulk. Bulk orders will take a longer to fulfill if they can't be shipped in standard packaging for USPS, UPS or FedEx. If drop shipping and the product will take 5+ weeks to arrive, and the supplier you are contacting is from the USA and you are selling to USA customers, then you know that the products are being shipping from somewhere else, and not from where you expect. Wholesale suppliers that are in the USA and ship to USA customers can generally send the product out within 24 of hours of receipt of the order and they should (unless of course it's a custom made product). Amazon has set the standard in this. Customers expect to receive online orders within a few days of buying. So your wholesale supplier that is also acting as your fulfillment center, must ship quickly.

5. How do I order from you and what methods of payment do you accept?
Do you email your orders? Do you need a fax machine? Do you need a login to their wholesale site? Whichever way it is, you need to make sure that it's convenient for you.  You need to place your orders quickly and efficiently. So make sure that you understand the process in full. We recommend placing a test order just to make sure you are familiar with the process. Payment methods accepted are important too! If you sell on eBay for example, you probably mainly use PayPal to process your payments. So if you can also pay your supplier with PayPal, then you can use PayPal as your main merchant system for incoming and outgoing payments. If the supplier only accepts net terms from established retailers, as a new online retailer, you will have to wait before you can work with that supplier, because you won't qualify for net terms yet.

In the Wholesaler Directory that we provide here at Worldwide Brands, we already provide the answers to many of the questions that you would normally ask a wholesale supplier. Just pay attention to what we post in the listings and that will help you decide if that supplier is a good fit for you, and THEN ask them your additional questions!
