Online Traffic - But Where Are My Sales?

Online traffic or website traffic refers to visitors of your website. In analytics, each visit is tracked with a session so it can track 1. Where the visitor came into your site and HOW and 2. What other pages they visit and 3. What page they leave on.

This is important information that you need to know so you can make changes and adjustments to your website based on STATS and DATA versus... "Oh I think I like the color green today for summertime. Let's change the font all over the site to green."

How much online traffic do I need?

I recently responded to a customer about traffic. They stated that they saw in analytics that they were getting on average 100 visitors a month, but no sales!

100 visitors in the online world is like a person driving through the same town that your store is in, but not driving down your street. Actually it's worse than that, they are in the same country as your store, but no where near your state.

Don't get me wrong, traffic is traffic, and starting to get traffic is a great thing! But you really can't start expecting sales after just 100 visitors.

What is Considered Good Traffic?

With under 10,000 visitors a month, it's really hard to draw conclusions from your analytics as to WHY customers aren't buying. But anything 10K and above each month will help you answer some basic questions.

100K and over per month is what you are targeting! You can really get some good analytic data with that amount of visitors per month.

Why do I need to know this information?

First, your analytic traffic data will tell you how someone came to your site and where they landed. That helps you understand what your best traffic sources are and what needs improvement.

Traffic sources are WHERE your traffic comes from. Example: Do you send people to your store from Facebook? That is a Traffic Source.

The page your online traffic lands on the most tells you which pages are popular. You can see bounce rates for those pages and make small adjustments over a period of time and track analytics to see if those changes helped or didn't.

There is so much more that analytics can help you understand your online traffic and which pages of your site need the most attention and which are best.
