Getting Customers to Pay Attention

Online business is a business. It's not a hobby or a part time job. If you truly want to be a successful online entrepreneur, you have to work hard at it, just like everything else. With all the competition online, it can be hard to get customers to notice you. But even so, there are still opportunities to be successful at selling products online. So roll up your sleeves, and get to work.

The absolute best way to get customers to pay attention to you, is to create a fantastic customer experience. Treat your customers how you would want to be treated. So how do you do that?

1. Get your customers to interact with you. - If you can ask questions in social media, create contests or offer a live chat on your site, those are just a few ways to invite customers to connect with you. Connections create brand loyalty and trust. If they see a real person behind everything, and a real person with similar interests and needs, that creates an invaluable connection that many BIG businesses overlook.

2. Be an entertainer, but do it carefully. -If you aren't naturally funny and thoughtful humor doesn't come naturally to you, don't worry, there are other ways to entertain. Perhaps the products you offer don't lend themselves to humor anyway, and you need to entertain by creating stories. Share stories about your life and how the products you offer impact your life. Share stories about your kids or pets. Same as point 1, when you bring a human element into everything and get personal, people see there is a real person behind it all.

3. Stay away from hot button topics. - Hot button topics create STRONG reactions and opposing sides. When you entertain, you have to keep certain things out of the picture. You don't want to be offensive and create that opposition yourself, you are a small business and can't afford to do that. [example: Nike (need I say more?)] So stay away from offering your opinions on politics, religion and other related topics. Keep those things separate and create multiple social media accounts. One personal, and one business and don't connect them together. It looks unprofessional if you are advertising a new product in one post, and offering your personal opinion about a controversial topic in another post.

4. Create excellent content. -The internet is already FULL of content. So you have to give your customers quality content that they want to see. If they want to watch videos, give them videos. If they want to read, give them things to read, if they want to look at picture slideshows, then give them pictures to look at. Start with what is that you offer and how can those products impact someone's life? What is the end result? What is the benefit? Answer those questions and create different forms of content. Then you have to test your content to figure out what your customers want to see, split testing and trying out different elements and tracking to see what your customers do is very important! Just because you like it, doesn't mean that your potential customers will.

For example, if you are offering hiking backpacks in different sizes and styles in your online store, you could start a blog about great hiking spots and add to it regularly, share pictures of people using your backpacks on Instagram, (engage your customers to share them with you!), share stories from your customers (another way to engage with them!) offer other ideas of how to use your backpacks, "not just for hiking in the mountains, but this style is perfect for urban hiking!" Not only does this engage your customers, but search engines LOVE good content and once those search engines deem that you have enough QUALITY content to be an authority on that product, guess what, naturally you will start to rise to the top of the search engines.
