You’re probably aware of my cross-country EBiz Scambuster Road Trip by now. If not, please take a look!

Greg’s wife Phyllis has a lifelong passion for Quilting. Greg and Phyllis want to do something to turn their Blog, QuiltingWithPhyllis.com, into a money making EBiz.

You can turn an informational blog into a money making opportunity in four ways.

1. Use it to lead to a Product Sales web site that you create.

2. Create information, such as EBooks, that you sell through the Blog.

3. Place advertising on the site.

4. Place Affiliate links on the Blog.

The smartest thing to do is to choose one of those methods only, and not try to mix them. For example, if you created EBooks to sell about Quilting, AND placed advertising on the site, the advertising would be leading people away from the EBooks that you’ve written, and you wouldn’t get the EBook sales you want. If you build a Product Sales Web Site, the Advertising and Affiliate links would lead people away from the Product Sales. And so on. You need to keep your audience focused on one thing that you want them to do. Splitting thier attention and sending them off in different directions only results in wasted time and effort.

The most important question, though, is how to BRAND yourself when you’re depending on a Blog to create revenue.

When you’re selling something based on an information presence, such as a Blog, you need to Brand yourself. A straight-out product sales web site is one thing. The products you sell already have their own Brand. For example, if you were selling kitchen cookware online, you might be selling Corning cookware. That Brand has been around for a long time, and everybody knows what it is. Because people are familiar with the Brand, they trust it and are willing to buy.

When it’s YOU that they need to trust in order to be willing to take your recommendations and either click an affiliate link, buy your EBook, click an advertising link or click through to your product sales site, they need to TRUST that you are an EXPERT.

So, you need to Brand YOURSELF. That means Social Marketing. This is going to include working at your Blog constantly, getting into Quilting (in Phyllis’ case) forums and answering questions, placing some how-to videos on You Tube, using some tools like Twitter to let people know what you do, and so forth.

Branding yourself personally takes time, but if you do it right and always treat your audience well (by never sending them to scam advertising or selling them junk products) the Brand that is YOU will last a very long time.

The best way to understand how to do this is to look at how others have done it. In Phyllis’ case, she needs to go to Google, About.com, Yahoo Answers, YouTube, etc., look for Quilting information, and study how other ‘experts’ in her field are getting the word out through Social Marketing and other methods.
