This Week's Insider Tip
5 Things You Need To Know BEFORE You Try To Sell A Product
By Tisha Hedges, Director of Operations of Worldwide Brands

Deciding what to sell is a big decision. Many new sellers who fail never actually spent much (if any) time researching the products they attempted to sell. They just dove right in, head first, into selling a product they thought was a good idea. They spent money, time and lots of effort to sell a product only to find out they couldn't compete.

Don't make that mistake. The suppliers in the Worldwide Brands Directory represent millions of wholesale products, but you need to find a few things out before you pick the right products to sell.

Our friends at SellNiches.com have sent us a list of 5 things you need to know about any product BEFORE you try to sell it (with infographic below!).

1. Can You Find a WHOLESALER?

If you see a product being sold online it doesn't always mean that anyone can work with the Supplier for that product.

Let's say, for example you’re interested in selling Coach Handbags online. Just because you may see Coach Handbags being sold on the internet doesn't mean just anyone can sell them. Some Supplies are really picky about who they will let sell their products. Some mainstream product Suppliers, like Coach Handbag set really high minimum orders in the tens of thousands of dollars. Other Suppliers may require you to have a physical store before they let you sell their product online.

The point is, you want to make sure that you can actually locate a real Supplier who's willing to work with you as an new seller, BEFORE you get your heart set on selling a product.

If you're a Member of Worldwide Brands, then you already have an edge over a lot of online sellers. The Worldwide Brands Directory of Certified Wholesalers gives you an extremely easy way to instantly see who the real Suppliers are for millions of products. Just as important, you can also find out if there is NOT a Supplier readily available for that product.

2. How EXPENSIVE Will It Really Be To Sell It Online?

It surprises most new sellers when they realize that some products are actually more expensive to sell online than others. When you do niche product research you will find that some products will be way out of your budget to try to compete with online. On the flip side, you’ll also be able to find niche products that WILL fit your budget and be very affordable to sell online with a good profit margin. That’s why we research first! You don’t want to start an online store based on selling a product without even knowing how much it’s really going to cost you to break into that market online.

This is even more important if you plan on using a Dropshipper. Dropshipping is a popular method of online selling for new sellers because it's the "no inventory" option. However, when something is popular it means it's got a lot of competition. New sellers often flock towards popular "mainstream" products thinking they can compete using a Dropshipper only to find out there is no room for profit. That's not the fault of "Drop Shipping" it’s the fault of thinking you can successfully drop ship ANY product you want.

When you spend the time to research first, you can find out how expensive or cheap any product will be to sell before you spend a dime trying to sell it.

3. Where Should You Sell It?

Should you sell on Amazon or would it be more profitable to open a niche online store? Which market place you sell at isn't a 'personal preference'. It's a decision that needs to be based on the current market. During your niche market research, you need to find out which marketplace would be best to break into as a new seller. For some products, it's a much better idea to start a niche online store than to compete on Amazon.

During your niche market research, if it looks like starting a niche store is the best way to go, you can also determine (well before you spend any money starting a store) which search engines could be the most lucrative for you to focus your marketing efforts on. Should you focus on Google or perhaps Bing would be a better place to start. These are all important parts of running a successful online business and all things you can figure out before you start selling any product online.

4. How Many People Are Shopping For It?

Demand can be misleading for new online sellers. Sometimes, new sellers think that their best chance of success is to make sure they find a product with the highest 'demand'. As a result, they tend to start playing 'king of the hill' with their product selections dismissing products that show a lower demand in a never ending pursuit to find a product with the highest demand.

In order to really estimate a products demand online, you need to be able to figure out the difference between "buyers" and "lookers". In other words, learn how to spot keyword phrases that indicate when someone is actually shopping for a product to buy and someone who may just be looking for general information about that product category. Doing some niche research first, helps you really hone in on your target customer base. You'll be able to identify how your customers are actually shopping for the product you're selling which not only helps you identify a more accurate demand 'number' but also helps you later on down the road with marketing, advertising and SEO efforts you'll make.

5. Can You Handle The Current Competition?

Finally, don't make the mistake of trying to find a product no one else is selling. Every product already has people selling it. Companies don't spend tons of money having a product manufactured if they can't get multiple retailers to sell it. So every product NEEDS multiple retailers in order to survive.

Having competition is natural. Having multiple sellers already selling a product you are thinking about selling is OK. Finding your niche online isn't about finding products that aren't being sold, it's about finding markets you can actually compete in as a new online seller. You need to determine the quality of your competition to see if you can compete with the current market before you dive in head first into a bad situation.

You want to find out BEFORE you try to sell a product if you can actually compete with the current competitors. Can you afford some of the basic advertising costs for that market? Could you build a better store than whats currently available to consumers in that market? These are things you can find out before you spend any money, if you take the time to research first!
