eBay Radio News with Lee and Griff

Lee: A famous haircut, Warren Buffet, and Sinatra’s golf clubs all feature in today’s eBay Radio News. I’m Lee Mirabal. Carolina Hurricanes’ player, Mike Commodore, stands out on the ice partly for his play and partly for his hair. Commodore had his hair cut Thursday to raise money for pediatric cancer research through the Jimmy V. Celebrity Junior Golf Classic. People bid on eBay for the right to cut his curly locks. The auction raised $14,000 for the cause.

A new promotion on eBay called “eBay Stores Red Door Sweepstakes” can net you some money. To enter the contest go to eBay.com/reddoors. Simply enter into the daily sweepstakes and then purchase an item from an eBay store seller between June 26th and June 30th and you’ll be entered to win.

Kentucky State treasurer, Jonathan Miller, says he wants his eBay back. Miller is asking the Commonwealth Office of Technology to restore access for his office to several websites blocked by the state government earlier this week. Miller said he’s upset because the state decided to block state employees from visiting websites like eBay.

On eBay people can bid on a lunch at a New York steak house with Warren Buffet who Forbes Magazine ranked the second richest man in the world. Proceeds go to the Glide Foundation, a nonprofit that helps the hungry and homeless. The current bid last I checked was $502,000. Wow.

Griff: Oh brother.

Lee: Well, I’d like to talk to the guy.

Griff: Well send him an email.

Lee: Oh please. Find out some of his secrets. The second richest man in the world, give me a break here.

Griff: You think you’re going to rich?

Lee: Well, listen, information helps one to succeed.

Griff: Mm-Hmm.

Lee: Let’s face it. That’s why you should go to the workshop titled “Using the New Sell Your Item Form” which will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 from 3-4 p.m. pacific time. New and experienced sellers will want to join eBay for this workshop. With fewer pages and more customized features, the new form helps make selling on eBay faster and easier.

A little bit of Palm Springs history is up for sale on eBay. It’s Frank Sinatra’s golf clubs. The clubs were given to Ellis Fitzsimmons by Frank Sinatra.

And last, be looking on eBay any minute for a very unusual tomato.

Griff: Hmm.

Lee: I know you don’t like these things, but I love them (laughter). An Arkansas gardener found a tomato with a message from a worm.

Griff: Oh, here we go.

Lee: Some TV stations are showing the video of the tomato with the word “hi” on it. That’s eBay Radio News. I’m Lee Mirabal. Now back to eBay Radio, where you got the Griff.

Griff: This is our first eBay Radio program since we broadcasted eBay Live in Las Vegas and do we have a show for you. This segment is brought to you by Auctiva.com, a simple and free selling solution for eBay sellers. Lee, years from now, if there is such a thing, you know, when the human race is over and everything is frozen, just like the end of artificial intelligence.

Lee: Oh man, did you take your medication today?

Griff: Yeah, but I’m thinking about how we’re going to be remembered this particular era. Oh yeah, that was the civilization that bid high amounts of money for vegetables and grilled cheese sandwiches that had images on them.

Lee: (Laughter)

Griff: Yeah, they were a substantial civilization.

Lee: But you know, I look at it differently.

Griff: What do you look at it as?

Lee: There was a civilization with a sense of humor. That’s how I look at it. It’s fun.

Griff: I’m speechless.

Lee: Remember fun?

Griff: No. (laughter)

Lee: It’s fun. And I know that every time I mention that casino that buys all the stuff you go, hmm, but I think it’s great. What a great marketing idea, because people want to have fun.

Griff: Sure. Fun. Here’s my money, now give me some fun. Where’s my fun? I gave you my money. I don’t have any fun. All I have is this ashtray filled with cigarette butts and a splitting headache from listening to whatever that sound effect was you used.

Lee: (Sigh).

Griff: Well, as a reminder, all three days of our lovely, fantastic, and may I add, fun eBay Live remote broadcasts are available for listening on demand by topic and date. Plus, if you missed the keynote speech you can listen to that and so much more at wsRadio.com. For the keynote go to wsRadio.com/keynote2006. I wonder, and I hope it’s not a tomato, what’s hot on eBay.

Announcer: It’s time for What’s Hot Now on eBay brought to you by HammerTapNow.com.

Jen: Hello eBay sellers. I’m HammerTap’s Jen Cano with the What’s Hot on eBay newsflash. Today let’s take a look at collectible dolls. When I used HammerTap software to conduct a category-wide research on 20,000 listings in the Dolls by Brand category, I found that an astounding 96% sold. But, as usual, I wanted to know more and here’s what I found: if you’re selling American Character dolls, Betsy McCall is your winner. Use the words “tag,” “box,” “MIB,” or “mint” to dramatically increase your selling price. If you sell another popular doll, American Girl, Kristin is the best moneymaker. But for overall top profit for the category, Annette Himstedt and Arranbee (R&B) Dolls take the cake. If you want to know how to find out what sells and increase your profits visit HammerTapNow.com.

Lee: And she is a doll.

Griff: Yeah.

Lee: Isn’t she great?

Griff: Oh, we had a great time with her, that was fun. I love that little song. We’re going to do it someday with her in the background live and I’m going to have a kazoo.

Lee: Yes, oh good (laughter).

Griff: It will be a little change of pace. Hey, I see eBetsy up on the board. What’s that about?

Lee: I have no idea. You want to go to her?

Griff: Sure.

Lee: Okay, let’s go to her and see what she’s all about. Hey eBetsy.

eBetsy: Hey Lee. We’re just having fun, fun, fun ‘til someone takes our eBay away.

Lee: Okay. Nobody’s going to take it away, honey.

Griff: Well, I might.

eBetsy: Well, I was just calling hoping that Griff might, at some point during this show today, give us an update of the Bobal to Boston project.

Griff: Well, it’s a little bit tricky. One of our most beloved community members, a guy named Bob Bobal and his wife, Alice, has been on eBay since the dawn of time and he’s a beloved figure in the community and he has some health problems, so it’s difficult for him to get to eBay Lives and next year they want to make sure he’s going to be there. So the community started getting together on one of the chat boards for eBay Live and putting together an effort to get him there and it’s fantastic. The difficulty we run into is that you can’t list charity listings or fundraising listings unless they’re through the Giving Works, so there is a challenge here. And I asked everyone on the chat board to kind of hold off listing anything until we get some guidelines from Trust and Safety and they’ve assured me those are coming. So within a day or two there will be some guidelines for doing this.

eBetsy: Well you know, where’s that Gulf Stream jet now that we need it.

Griff: You know, it’s actually a lot harder to carry somebody around in a Gulf Stream jet than it is in first class.

eBetsy: Well, we’re just about to get on a Boeing 747 ourselves. We’re heading down to Houston for my husband’s doctor’s appointment, but I just wanted you to know that we’re wearing our “You Got the Griff” tee shirt and I’m wearing my eBay Radio hat.

Griff: Well, you’re decked out in your finest finery. Thanks eBetsy.

eBetsy: Now, if only that airplane could pick up some Wi-Fi we could listen on the way.

Griff: That’s coming.

eBetsy: Anyway, I just wanted to touch base and say hello and thank you all again for how much fun we had at eBay Live.

Lee: And you really were a big help to us, eBetsy.

eBetsy: Oh, thank you Lee.

Griff: Yeah, we’ll talk more about that later.

Lee: Thank you.

Griff: Okay, bye. This segment has been brought to you by Auctiva.com, a simple and free selling solution for eBay sellers. Up next, learn to transform the drudgery of accounting into one of the simplest actions imaginable when we continue with more eBay Radio.
