| Segment 4 - How to Monetize Your Blog – Part III |
|
Rob: We’re finishing up our conversation about turning your blog into a source of income with Jim Kukral, founder of BlogKits.com.
Rob: Jim, you started to talk about a couple of different ways. We talked about Google’s solution. You mentioned Blogads and your own site, BlogKits. Can you describe how BlogKits works and then maybe mention how Blogads works, just to give people some more detail on ways to make money with blogs?
Jim: BlogKits is built to actually help the long tail of bloggers, which is 99%, the 63 million blogs out there that get just a handful of visitors a week. Because even if you use Google AdSense on your blog, if you don’t have a ton of visitors you’re probably only going to make a few pennies a day. So what we do at BlogKits is focus on helping the vast majority of bloggers make money. So the system we have in place right now allows bloggers to easily put ads on their blogs that when somebody clicks on an ad and buys something the blogger gets a commission. So if somebody clicks on an ad on your blog and buys a $100 pair of shoes from Zappos.com and the referral is 15% you make $15 right there off the bat. So that’s what BlogKits is currently trying to help bloggers with. Now, we’re going to expand that as well.
Rob: Very interesting. Explain Blogads then.
Jim: Blogads is a marketplace. So you can go in and say, I want to sell a spot on my blog and I’m going to charge $50 or $500 a month for it. And then you list it at Blogads. And then people come to Blogads and they say, hey, Jim’s got a great blog there, I’m going to go ahead and he’s going to sell me that space on his blog for a week for $50 or a month for $500 and then they can buy it. So it’s a marketplace.
Rob: Got it. There are resources people can use to learn more about blogs and blogging for profit. Can you recommend what would be a good place for people to go and get educated about it or find out more about it?
Jim: Absolutely. There are so many great resources and places to learn about becoming a professional blogger. Because, like you said, what people do is they start to blog because they’re interested in the topic and then they learn that, wow, I can start making money with it. At that point they start to go out and actively look for that information. So there are a lot of great sites out there. Obviously, Problogger.net run by Darren Rouse, a gentleman out of Australia, has probably the best resource out there from blogging for beginners to blogging at an advanced level. He’s got every piece of information out there you could possibly hope for. He actually bought his house with the money that he made from blogging.
Rob: That’s wonderful.
Jim: And I just started a new site called AskTheBlogger.com and I have a lot of great information there too to help. If you have questions you can ask questions.
Rob: That’s fantastic.
Chris: Where do you see blogging going in the future? Do you think the value proposition is offers to online sellers, for example, will increase?
Jim: Yeah, I do, and I think that the biggest challenge right now for large brands to advertise on blogs is reaching that long tail. And that means that if I’m Dell, trying to get my ad on 63 million blogs is almost an impossibility because these bloggers don’t have the ability or haven’t clued in to becoming marketers yet. So it’s hard to reach out. I can’t hire an intern to go out and find all those blogs for me and then buy an ad on it. But back to my point, as bloggers get started they learn to become marketers. The same thing that happened with webmasters ten, fifteen years ago, they started out as webmasters or designers, the same with me, and then over time you learn how to become a marketer, you learn how to make money, you learn how to use these tools. And the same thing is happening with bloggers right now. So if you look at 63 million blogs now, and the numbers just keep growing and growing, imagine how many trillions and trillions of pages of content these bloggers are going to generate over the next five years. And as these bloggers get smarter they’re going to institute new web 2.0 ad systems and things they’re going to put on their blogs. So over the next five years there’s going to be tons of content, tons of new blogs, and tons of new opportunities. And I think that it will all come together and there will be a way to reach them all.
Chris: And that is a perfect way to wrap up our show for today. Jim Kukral, thanks so much for being here, we appreciate your time.
Jim: Thank you very much.
