| Segment 2 – How to Monetize Your Blog – Part I |
|
Rob: This segment of the Entrepreneur Magazine eBiz Show is brought to you by UnwiredBuyer.com. Never miss another auction, sign up at UnwiredBuyer.com. Blogging is one of the biggest trends on the internet right now, but a blog can do more than give you an online voice. It can also generate significant revenue for your ebusiness. Joining us today is Jim Kukral, founder of BlogKits.com, to share different ways you can turn your blog into a serious income stream.
Rob: Jim, great to talk to you again. Welcome to the show.
Jim: Thank you very much for having me, I’m glad to be here.
Rob: So let’s just review for our listeners who may not be familiar with the concept of blogging. Can you just give us a brief explanation of what a blog is and how they’ve become such an important part of internet marketing.
Jim: Sure. Blogs originally started out as diaries or journals. People would come in and start writing about their lives and their day and whatever they were passionate about. And they evolved over time and the tools became available like blogger.com and WordPress and these tools that allowed somebody to just easily sign up and instantly be able to create a blog, which is why it flourished so fast. So people are actually able to come in, start a blog in a matter of minutes, and have their voice heard around the world.
Rob: And how big is the market for blogging? Are they professional bloggers, do people earn money doing this?
Jim: Absolutely. Technorati, which is a blog search engine, says that there are 63 million blogs in existence. So that’s an average of 175,000 new blogs being created every day, or something like that.
Rob: Wow.
Jim: Yeah. So through the years of the research that I’ve done, you know, I started blogging in 2001 and I started it as a personal thing and then it turned into a business thing. And I think that’s how most people start is they start a blog to write about something that they’re interested in and then they realize that, yeah, there is an opportunity to make some money with this. There is an opportunity to boost my career with this. So yes, there are a lot of professional bloggers and people who actually do stay at home and blog.
Chris: So Jim, you mentioned getting started. What is the best way to get started blogging?
Jim: The best way to get started blogging if you’re just a regular person or a business is just to go out and get started. Go to blogger.com. Right now, sign up, get a free account, and just create a blog. You can have one done in a matter of minutes and then just start writing. But the best advice I can give you, though, is to pick a topic that you’re interested in or passionate about. So if you have a business and you sell shoes or you’re a shoe repair shop you want to start a blog that’s going to talk about those things because you need to be passionate about what you’re going to talk about or it’s really not going to work down the line.
Chris: Makes sense.
Rob: What would you say is really the key to successful blogging, what’s at the heart of this?
Jim: The most important thing to keep in mind is just what I mentioned before, writing about something that you’re completely passionate about, because the #1 problem that blogs have is people start them up and they don’t finish them. So if you’re writing about something that you really don’t care about or you’re just sort of interested in, chances are you’re probably not going to continue it. So to be successful in blogging you really need to figure out what you’re interested in and then stick with it. Because if you’re really interested in the topic you’ll be more apt to go in and write more about it. So stay consistent with what you’re writing and keep it up.
Chris: So do people go into blogging with the idea that they’re going to push out different types of products and things they may not know about, okay, this is a business opportunity? Or obviously I guess you think it should be more of a mix of personal interests and where you’re making money on that is what you have to consider if you plan on making money.
Jim: Most people start their blogs just for personal reasons, but nowadays a lot of people do start their blogs for business reasons and my advice to them as a blogging consultant is to go out and, you don’t write about your business, you write about what’s solving problems for your customers.
Chris: Education before promotion.
Jim: Exactly, because I always tell my customers that nobody wants to hear about your company.
Chris: Yep, they want to hear what they can do. Anyway, it is time for another short break. We’re going to talk about that a little bit more with Jim Kukral in just a moment. Be sure to visit our site at ebizshow.com for even more free ebusiness information 24/7. Much more to talk about after the break. I’m Chris Malta.
Rob: And I’m Robin Cowie.
