EBay for a Cause - Selling on EBay to Benefit Nonprofits

by Chris Malta & Robin Cowie

A Giving Solution
Charity organizations are usually restricted from serving more people only by a lack of funding that would enable them to extend the reach of their services. Most businesses and individuals are willing to give what they have, but usually that’s in the form of goods or services. And most nonprofits don’t have the administrative support they need to take those types of donations and convert them into money.

To help bridge that gap, MissionFish partnered with eBay to enable users to donate their proceeds directly to charities. Sean Milliken, founder of MissionFish.org, recalls seeing the potential: “We saw how eBay was connecting buyers and sellers, and we thought that same model could work for nonprofit organizations by linking buyers and donors.”

Helping You Help Others
EBay has found numerous ways to make giving easier:

They pre-qualify charities—to date, about 5,000 have signed up with their program, and every one of them has been vetted to ensure they don’t promote hatred, violence, or terrorism. Nonprofits must prove they’re legitimate to join, so you know your money is going to truly worthy causes.

They have a platform specifically for listing items that will benefit charities (GivingWorks.EBay.com or EBay.com/Charity). Nonprofits can go there directly and sell goods they’ve received. Or individuals can elect to give from 10% to 100% of the final sale towards any approved organization. When 100% goes to charity, eBay pays the insertion and final value fees associated with that listing.

Goods benefiting nonprofits are given a unique tag by eBay, and these tagged products tend to sell more quickly and for higher final prices than regular items with comparable descriptions. The tags tell the buyer about the organization they’re helping and how much of the profits they’ll receive.

You can use your store, as well as auctions, to give. Every single time you fill out a Sell Your Item Form on eBay, you’re given the option to donate to any of their charities.
You’re provided a fast, efficient way to turn goods and services into something a charity can use. Milliken states, “When you think about the incredible marketplace eBay is — 30-some billion dollars transacted yearly — if we can get just a small percentage of that contributed to the nonprofit sector, we’ll make a huge difference in the lives of the people and communities these organizations serve.”
