affiliate marketing - A Meeting of the Minds - EBay's Affiliate and Developers Programs

by Chris Malta

Few people are aware that selling isn't the only way to make money on eBay. Both their Affiliate and Developers Programs (Affiliates.eBay.com, Developer.eBay.com) present opportunities to profit. As an affiliate, all you need is a web site or application to drive traffic to eBay: anytime that traffic converts, you make a commission. Or, if you're technically inclined, you can use your programming skills to build applications and tools that help sellers automate their processes and run their businesses more smoothly. The two programs often work quite well in conjunction — many affiliates are developers who've monetize their innovations and applications by using them to direct traffic to eBay.

Beyond putting up links leading back to eBay, affiliates can also put up real time data from eBay's web service that shows current inventory. This coming year, eBay plans to release Ad Content, an advertising tool that will allow affiliates to show, on their own web sites, all relevant eBay sales and auctions currently running, in real time — when they're ending, their pictures and prices, etc. Alan Lewis, Technical Evangelist for eBay's Developers Program, enthuses, "Developers can easily extend this very simple case of JavaScript even further using eBay's web services to create something that's more complex and targeted to end users."

Something for Everyone
It doesn't really matter whether you're an experienced web designer or new to eCommerce altogether. The ways you can profit through these programs are only limited by your imagination. The following are examples of creative ways people are cashing in:
  • UnwiredBuyer.com is an application developed and monetized by an affiliate to call buyers' phones when auctions they've bid on are about to expire. It even lets buyers bid from their phones so they never miss an item.

  • OnlyeBay.com is a random blog put up by an enthusiast/affiliate. Their eBay-enabled content site speaks to people who are interested in the latest eBay news, and earns money for them by directing traffic to eBay's site.
Other ideas affiliates have converted into revenue include:
  • Displaying eBay sales and auctions for items that complement their web site's product line, or would interest their target audience, but that they themselves don't carry.

  • Creating a comparison shopping site that pulls from eBay as one of its inventory sources, and send buyers to eBay.

  • Creating a site for PlayStation 3 enthusiasts, using the ad content widget to show visitors all current eBay sales and auctions for PS3s, as well as PS3 games and accessories.
Whatever level you're at online, you can profit from being a part of eBay's Affiliate or Developer Programs.

Affirms Lewis, "A lot of people have had great success with our programs — they're terrific business opportunities."
